Volunteering: UmpiringIn an effort to keep our registration fees as low as possible, UCALL does not hire paid umpires. We utilize our volunteers to umpire the Senior, Junior, Major, and Minor games. UCALL’s Umpire-In-Chief, a member of UCALL’s Board of Directors, is our resident expert on the rules and regulations as laid out by Little League. The Umpire-In-Chief heads our volunteer crew of umpires and assists with the training and scheduling of the crew. Umpiring duty can be divided into umpiring the bases and umpiring behind the plate. We recommend starting with base umpiring if you are new to umpiring. With some experience, behind the plate umpiring would be the next step up. UCALL and District 45 offer Umpiring Clinics prior to the beginning of each season. This is an excellent opportunity for someone new to umpiring to learn the ground rules and techniques involved. It is also an excellent refresher course for those who just need to brush up on rules before the start of the season. Umpiring is a great way to be on the field and to be a part of the game. We follow standard Little League rules so this would be an ideal fit for you if you have played before and know the rules. If you are completely new to baseball, we might recommend the snack bar and field maintenance volunteer opportunities for your first season then umpiring for your subsequent seasons. If you are a high school student, we can offer you community service credits for your help. Our Minor and Major games are played at Veterans Memorial Park (formerly Hall Ranch Park) at the corner of Dyer and Regents in Union City.
